Gap Year Brochure

Japan's high-tech cities are hugely exciting and sometimes a little overwhelming at first, but you'll soon acclimatise. Tokyo has a terrific level of energy about it, but in the small enclaves the calm ancient Zen can be found in the form of tea ceremonies and cherry blossom filled parks. These hidden treasures are all over Japan, not just Tokyo.

Real Gap's Japan Highlights

Tokyo, Mt Fuji, Himeji castle, Kyoto, the public baths, and lots of great places, which take you off the regular tourist trail!

The City of Toyko
Tokyo plus the surrounding suburbs make up the most populated high-tech metropolis in the world with a staggering 33 million inhabitants. The most noticeable peculiarity of Tokyo is that there is not just one city centre, but it is made up of districts, each with its own centre. Lake Okutama, Mt. Kumotori, Mt. Takao, Mt. Mitake and Mt. Mihara are all in Tokyo, you could spend some time exploring these natural wonders whilst doing some Paid Work in Japan.

Map of Japan

Kyoto
Kyoto was Japan's original capital, until the 19th century. There are still many sights to behold in this city, the Gion (the traditional geisha district) and the numerous decorative temples.

Hokkaido (Sapporo)
Every February since 1950 a famous festival, like no other is held in Sapporo. The "Yuki Matsuri" or "Snow Festival" held to celebrate Hokkaido's extreme cold climate. The intricate ice sculptures of world famous buildings (Taj Mahal, Bank of England, etc.), imaginary castles etc are entirely made of ice and draw millions of visitors each year. If you take part in our Japan Ski and Snowboard Instructor Course you could schedule in a visit to the Yuk Matsuri in your free time.
