Jungle Expedition
For the ultimate in off-the-beaten-track travel experiences it's difficult to beat going on a jungle expedition. If you embark on a jungle expedition on your gap year you will travel through some of the world's most remote and extreme environments. Jungle expeditions aren't always easy going and they are most definitely not for a traveller that likes their creature comforts - but it's precisely this fact that makes going on a jungle expedition such an exciting prospect. Going on a jungle expedition gets you away from the usual tourist trail and enables you to see some incredible places few other people ever get to see. Our ‘Jungle expedition' page takes a look at some of the options you could consider if you want to experience the ‘Indiana Jones' lifestyle on your gap year.
Jungle Expedition - South America
Several of Real Gap's South American programmes make going on a jungle expedition possible. For example with Real Gap's ‘Peru Rainforest River - Turtle Conservation Programme' you can go on a jungle expedition living and working with jungle communities deep in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest doing your bit to protect endangered turtles. It is also possible to go on a jungle expedition in the Amazon north of Peru, in the Tena Region of Ecuador, with Real Gap's comprehensive ‘Gap Year Expedition Abroad - Ecuador' programme. On this jungle expedition you spend time kayaking and rafting on the Amazon whilst discovering the local wildlife and Indian tribes at the same time. On the opposite side of South America you could go a jungle expedition exploring the famous Orinoco Delta with Real Gap's ‘Gap Year Expedition - Venezuela' programme. On the jungle expedition in Venezuela you spend time experiencing the culture of the local Warao Indians and also go in search of the world's biggest snake - the fearsome anaconda!
Jungle Expedition - Borneo
With Real Gap it's also possible to go on a jungle expedition to the remote Asian island of Borneo. Borneo is one of only two islands where the gravely endangered orang-utan can be found - the only great ape to be found outside of Africa. The deepest jungle interior of Borneo is still largely undiscovered (indeed as recently as 2005 an entirely new species of cat-like mammal was discovered on Borneo) so it's an incredibly exciting place to go on a jungle expedition. Both of Real Gap's programmes on Borneo are based in the area belonging to Malaysia and enable travellers both to assist with orang-utan conservation and also to live and with and work alongside the local Iban tribes-people (direct descendants of the head-hunting tribes of Borneo). All in all an amazing jungle expedition experience.
Jungle Expedition - Thailand
Many travellers visiting Thailand head immediately head south from Bangkok to the beaches and miss out on the incredible ‘Golden Triangle' area of northern Thailand. If you travel to Thailand on Real Gap's ‘Work and Travel Thailand - The Thailand Discovery Programme' you experience everything Thailand has to offer, including a jungle expedition in the north. Highlights of the jungle expedition experience in Thailand include rafting on the Mae Klong river, camping in the Um-Phang wildlife sanctuary (where if you are extremely lucky you might catch a glimpse of a tiger) and an elephant ride to a Karen hill-top village.
If you fancy the idea of going on a jungle expedition and have any questions or ideas you would like to discuss with someone in person then why not give one of Real Gap's team of expert travel advisers a call?
