India Kanjar Community Outreach

Trip code: INKJ

A very important aim of this project is to get the Kanjar community to understand why it is so important for them to be treated as equals by the rest of society. Without this understanding the communities will have no hope in getting access to hygiene facilities, health and education. For many years, the Kanjar have been a community of their own due to the fact that it is such a struggle to integrate into society in general.

Kanjar Community Development

Orientation

On your third day in India you will have a welcome meeting at the camp where you will meet other volunteers and staff. Here, you will receive all the information about all the local facilities that will be available to you as well as information on weekend travel options.

The day after this you will have an introduction to the Kanjar people and will hear all about the work that has already been done on the project within the community. There is also the chance to visit the community that you will be working within, the surrounding area and the local schools.

On day five you can visit the community and school again, but this time you’ll get to meet the local project that you will be working alongside. The afternoon will be spent working out an action plan for your first week of volunteering and how to distribute working areas.

Accommodation and Meals

Throughout the programme you will be staying in Jhalrapatan (Patan), an area in which school activities are carried out by the project. You will be close to Patan market where you can buy basic items and there is also a post office, cash machine, Internet cafes and international phone facilities.

Your accommodation will be basic but does have electricity and water supplies, though you should expect power cuts! Lots of effort will be made to make your stay comfortable. Rooms will be single sex with a maximum of 4 people per room, sleeping in bunk beds. Meals are cooked for you and will be served at specific meal times.

You will need to commute to the project by bicycle or local public transport – a great way to see daily rural life in India.

Free Time

There is lots of stuff in the area that you can in your free time. You can plan excursions to attractions in the local area or you can just use your spare time to relax and enjoy being in India.

The area is full of beautiful temples and places that are important historically and culturally so you can get a real feel for this particular area of India. There is an optional tour to the Taj Mahal, which your project co-ordinator will sort out whilst you are on the project.

Project Support

Throughout your stay in India you will have the support and guidance of a coordinator. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.

In addition you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.

Project Age Limit

The minimum age for this project is 18 years old; the maximum is decided on a participant-by-participant basis.
