Name: Katherine Cruise
Programme: Goa Project
Dates: 18/12/06 - 14/01/07
How did you feel before you joined the programme?
I was really excited because I'd already been teaching in Himachal Pradesh and had really enjoyed it. I felt that I could contact Real gap if I had any questions or concerns and that they would provide any support necessary.

What was the accommodation like?
The accommodation was basic but fine. It was at the back of a beach front hotel, so we were one minute walk away from the beach which was fantastic.
I had become ill due to eating spicy food for two months (!) and the Doctor told me I must only eat plain un-spiced food. The camp staff were very understanding and even made me my own meals which was really good and helped me to get better very soon. |
How was your experience in the destination(s) that you travelled to with Real Gap?
The travelling was great. There was only 4 of us on this project so there was no possibility of overcrowding! We travelled by comfortable mini bus, jeeps or trains and there were no problems.
What did you think of the programme? The trekking was absolutely brilliant. We camped out two nights, saw a tribal village, lots of wonderful scenery and even went abseiling. When we got to Goa, I really enjoyed working at the day care centre as the children were wonderful, so affectionate and keen to learn all the games and songs tasks we taught them.
The project was 5 minutes walk from the camp so in a very good location. The working hours were 9 -12 which I thought was good because otherwise we would have been too tired since the work required constant energy and new ideas. I really enjoyed the work, and afterwards we would usually go to the beach where we would spend time with more local children playing with them or drawing etc.
There was also plenty of time to relax so this project was a very good combination of volunteering in a relaxed, holiday setting.

The only downside was that we all would've like to volunteer for longer to get to know the children better and to make more of a difference to the community.
How have you benefited from your experience?
Yes definitely. I met some wonderful people who I am still friends with now, and had some of the best times of my life! I gained confidence from the project, I realised how much I enjoy outdoor activities like trekking and abseiling (which I'd not really done before) and that I would like to work with children in the future. |
What advice could you offer to someone considering this project?
- Goa is more westernised than the rest of India so this project is ideal if you would like an introduction to the country without the huge culture shock.
- If you are a girl it is best to wear salwar suits whilst working because it shows more respect for the Teacher and the local community.
- Bring walking boots for the fantastic trekking, and a bikini/ swimming shorts for the beach!

Were you pleased you went with Real Gap? I had a wonderful time on this project and would recommend it to everyone, particularly those who are looking for a combination of fun, worthwhile volunteering and an introduction to India.
