Name: Keisha Narain
Programme: Houses to Homes in Guatemala
Dates: 3rd June-16th June
How did you feel before you joined the programme? I wasn't sure what to expect from the family, the programme or the lifestyle. However, Real Gap provided several information packs which explained each of the above. Even when I wanted more information, Real Gap assisted me with a quick email response.
What was the accommodation like? I was a bit apprehensive about staying with a host family at the beginning, especially not being able to speak a lot of Spanish, but I couldn't have felt more comfortable. They were so accommodating and very welcoming. The house was always very clean and the food was delicious. |

What did you think of the programme? What was the most memorable part of your trip?
 |
The programme was so rewarding and everyday was such great fun. The builders are such a laugh and we all ended up going out with each other to celebrate the completion of the houses.
The programme exceeded all my expectations. So many stories and so many wonderful memories. My most memorable moment was handing over the keys to the families and seeing them in the house that you contributed 100% to. Being able to leave them with that is a feeling you can't prepare yourself for! |
How have you benefited from your experience?
I have become more appreciative for the things we take for granted and I'm now aware that they are more luxuries. I have become a stronger person. For example, when you see how little the people have, you can't break down and cry and feel sorry for them, you have to get your hands dirty and do whatever you can to help and make a difference.
I feel so privileged to have been able to do what I did and I certainly intend on going back there, for longer!
What advice could you offer to someone considering this project? Go there open minded because you will not know what to expect until you're there. Benefit from your time there and try and plan things on the weekend because there is so much to see. Embrace it all because it is a rare opportunity and one you should take advantage of! |
