Kenya Medical and Community Programme
Kenya is known as one of the poorest countries in Africa and the population is vastly affected by HIV/AIDS, unemployment and poverty. There are countless opportunitie's for volunteers to make a difference to the lives of those affected by these problems.
Volunteer RoleVolunteers spend two days a week in the slums of Nairobi taking part in the community support programme. The remaining time will be divided between working at a local hospital, depending on your medical background or skills, and at an orphanage/day care centre in Limuru.
This gives volunteers the chance to spend time in Nairobi making a positive contribution to the health service, a chance to gain a unique medical experience and to also make a profound contribution to the lives of people in the surrounding community.
There will be many highlights to your worthwhile experience, some of which may be:
- Helping in various orphanages in Limuru.
- You will assist with improving the facilities and also become involved in the teaching and caring of the children
- Gaining medical experience under the supervision of qualified doctors and nurses if you have a desire to work in the medical field
- Have the opportunity to really make a difference in the community and see life in the slums of Nairobi
- Getting a taste of the true Kenyan culture
- Learning a bit of Swahili!
Location
The project is based in Nairobi and Limuru, just outside Nairobi in the beautiful hilly countryside.
Accommodation and MealsYou will be staying in a two-bedroom cottage, sharing with other volunteers with a maximum of four people in one room. A cook will provide meals and there are laundry and house keeping services on a regular basis. Three meals a day will be provided.
As the accommodation is in a Christian area the culture means that drinking is seen as ‘taboo’ by the local community. Therefore no alcohol is allowed on the premises but there is a lovely restaurant close by where volunteers can go for drinks in the evenings.
