Kenya Sports Development Expedition
The Real Sport Experience SDX was developed to enhance the lives of Kenyan communities, while also providing challenges to gap year students and career breakers alike. The Sports Expedition aims to initiate a continued programme of sport and health promotion, to help educate young people on the serious issues of HIV and AIDS. By using sport as an educative tool, the communities involved will hopefully benefit from the increased health awareness and promotion of wellbeing.
Working with 3 Kenyan schools, volunteers will be involved in all levels of the programme, from low-level construction of sports facilities to full sports instruction and education. The project leader will coordinate all volunteer activities.
Orientation After arriving into the camp, you will have your orientation. This will cover basic Swahili lessons, local safety, an orientation of the area and an introduction to the local community.
Sports Project Volunteer RoleDuring the volunteer aspect of the Expedition, each team member will be split into teams, so that everyone has the opportunity to spend time in the schools and also take part in the sports development side. Each volunteer will take part in the following activities:
- Coaching children different sports - mainly be football, however, there is the possibility to teach other sports of interest. The volunteers will play a role in selecting the football teams for the tournament at the end.
- Building new sports facilities - this will involve low-level building i.e. football pitches and basketball hoops etc. Most of the work will involve clearing areas where sport can be played
Volunteers should have an open mind to how their skills can be used.
Accommodation & MealsAll Expedition Team members will be accommodated in permanent safari-style tents. These tents are built on solid foundations and are one of the best ways to maintain the eco-friendly approach of the camp. All meals and drinking water are provided. Meals are made from local produce, using regional cooking techniques. All diets can be catered for.
