Kenya

Kenya lies astride the equator on the eastern coast of Africa. It is bordered in the north by Sudan and Ethiopia, in the east by Somalia, on the southeast by the Indian Ocean, on the Southwest by Tanzania and the west by Lake Victoria and Uganda.

With its vast plains teeming with abundant wildlife, the annual migration of a million wildebeest and zebras across the Maasai Mara, the snow capped peak of Mount Kenya and the spectacular palm fringed beaches of the Indian Ocean, Kenya’s natural environment and cultural heritage is unrivalled in Africa.

This project is located in the Western area of Kenya, the Busia district in particular. Kenya’s western province, of which Busia is a part, is on the Kenyan-Ugandan border and Lake Victoria. The topography of the region ranges from hilly, for example Mount Elgon (an extinct shield volcano) is located in this area of Kenya, right down to the plains around Lake Victoria.

Lake Victoria is partially located in the Busia district of Kenya (as well as being partially within Uganda and Tanzania). The lake provides a vital economy for the area, namely fishing and is the second largest fresh water lake in the world as well as being considered the source of the White Nile (before it combines with the Blue Nile to create the world famous Nile in Egypt).

The area around Lake Victoria is thought to be some of the most densely populated regions on the planet! Agriculture is also a main economy of the area, and 80% of the population live rurally to work in this industry.

Free Time
Throughout the programme you will be living in a rural area of Kenya.  Many volunteers take the opportunity of rural living to enjoy relaxing and soaking up the culture in their free time, by interacting with the locals, reading a good book or doing their laundry!

Being in Kenya means that you are not too far from Nairobi, which is a major transport hub for overland tours as the gateway to Eastern and Southern Africa.

We have a number of different tours to choose from which could take you down into Tanzania and the infamous Zanzibar Spice Island. You could choose to visit Victoria Falls or even travel the whole distance into Cape Town or Johannesburg in South Africa, via Botswana or Namibia. We have tours that last from 3 days to 56, so something for everyone’s time scale. Please contact us to enquire about these options and we will be happy to send you further details and help you explore Africa in a safe and adventurous way.

Getting There
You will need to arrange your internal flights from Nairobi to Kisumu Airport for the project start date, where you will be met by your project coordinators and driven to your accommodation.  Please note that this transfer is approximately 5 hours by road.

Upon departure, you will be transported back to Kisumu Airport in order to catch the internal flight to Nairobi International Airport for your onward journey.
