The volunteer project is located in the West of Kenya in a town called Kimilili, 3 hours North of Kisumu. The area where you will be located is very beautiful with many natural landmarks, such as waterfalls and caves to visit, and in Kitale, 60 km away, there is a game reserve to visit.

Kenya
Kenya lies astride the equator on the eastern coast of Africa. It is bordered in the north by Sudan and Ethiopia, in the east by Somalia, on the southeast by the Indian Ocean, on the Southwest by Tanzania and the west by Lake Victoria and Uganda.

With its vast plains teeming with abundant wildlife, the annual migration of a million wildebeest and zebras across the Maasai Mara, the snow capped peak of Mount Kenya and the spectacular palm fringed beaches of the Indian Ocean, Kenya’s natural environment and cultural heritage is unrivalled in Africa.

Free Time
The rural area where the programme is situated is very beautiful and there are many natural landmarks such as waterfalls and caves to visit.

You will be living in quite a rural area of Kenya and therefore many volunteers enjoy just relaxing and soaking up the culture at the weekends, by interacting with the locals or reading a good book and doing their laundry, for example. There are a few places to visit in the local area and some natural landmarks, such as waterfalls and caves. The programme is also 60km from Kitale where there is a local game reserve and orphanage that you can visit.

Being in Kenya means that you are close to Nairobi, which is a major transport hub for overland tours as the gateway to Eastern and Southern Africa. We have a number of different tours to choose from which could take you down into Tanzania and the famous Zanzibar Spice Island. You could choose to visit Victoria Falls or even travel the whole distance into Cape Town or Johannesburg in South Africa, via Botswana or Namibia.

We have tours that last from 3 days to 56. Please contact us to enquire about these options and we will be happy to send you further details and help you explore Africa in a safe and adventurous way.

Getting There
You will need to fly into Kisumu Airport in Kenya, via Nairobi. Upon arrival, you will be met by our project representatives who will drive you to your project, which is approximately 3 hours by car. Upon departure, you will be transported back to Kisumu Airport in order to catch the internal flight to Nairobi International Airport for your onward journey.

Please ensure this is an afternoon flight to allow enough time for the 3-hour transfer from your project.
