Nairobi Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and largest city; the most populous city in East Africa and the fourth largest city of the continent. The name ‘Nairobi’ comes from a Masaai phrase ‘Enkare Nyorobi’, meaning ‘the place of cool waters’ but is more popularly known locally as the ‘Green City in the Sun’.
Nairobi became capital of the former British protectorate in 1905 and continued as capital after independence was granted in the 1960s. It is located in the south of Kenya, on the Nairobi River and is the only major city in the world to have a border with a National Park – a great place to spot some of the wildlife that Kenya is famous for. On a clear day, one can spot both Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro from the city.
Climate At 1661 metres above sea level, Nairobi has a moderate climate but does experience some pretty chilly evenings (especially in June/July). The warmest weather comes between December and March, with average temperatures of 24C. There are also two rainy seasons, April to May and November to December. As Nairobi is very close the Equator, seasonal changes are minimal.
Kenya Kenya is possibly beyond the wildest dreams of your average wildlife lover or anthropologist – being home to the earliest evidence of man’s ancestry as well as the millions of migratory wildebeest and zebras that cross Kenya with their entourage of hungry predators every year. For the adventurous, Kenya takes the biscuit with opportunities to sleep out in the bush, visit the local Masaai and the chance to go on some of the best safaris in the world, by foot or vehicle. If the promise of breathtaking wildlife parks, untouched beaches, flourishing coral reefs, the sight of elephants in front of Mount. Kilimanjaro and ancient Swahili cities doesn’t attract you to Kenya…nothing will.
