Kenya Kenya sits on the Equator in the east of Africa and is one of the worlds most famous and most popular safari destinations, which is, in no doubt, mostly due to the massive annual migration of wildebeest and co across the plains of the Maasai Mara.
As well as boasting some of the best National Parks and a hugely diverse population of wildlife, Kenya also has gorgeous Indian Ocean beaches, a flourishing undersea world of coral reefs and a lot of sunny days every year, making it a really fantastic travel destination.
Free Time You will be living in quite a rural area of Kenya and therefore many volunteers enjoy just relaxing and soaking up the culture at the weekends, by interacting with the locals or reading a good book and doing their laundry, for example. There are a few places to visit in the local area, such as Mt Elgon lodge or the museum and even a few bars to relax in and allow you to get away for a few hours.
Being in Kenya means that you are close to Nairobi, which is a major transport hub for overland tours as the gateway to Eastern and Southern Africa.
We have a number of different tours to choose from which could take down into Tanzania and the infamous Zanzibar Spice Island. You could choose to visit Victoria Falls or even travel the whole distance into Cape Town or Johannesburg in South Africa, via Botswana or Namibia.
We have tours that last from 3 days to 56. Please contact us to enquire about these options and we will be happy to send you further details and help you explore Africa in a safe and adventurous way.
Weather Kenya is one of those places that gets sunshine for the majority of the year and enjoys a totally tropical climate. There are two rainy seasons, the long from April to June and the short from October to December, which generally just involves some pretty heavy rain in the afternoons. Weather varies from region to region depending on various factors – generally the Northern areas are dry, the Coast is hot and humid and the inland areas are the most temperate.
Getting There You will need to fly into and out of Kisumu Airport, via Nairobi. You must get the morning flight from Nairobi to Kisumu Airport. Upon arrival at Kisumu Airport, our African representatives will be there to meet you and drive you to your project, located approximately 4 hours drive away. Please note that if you arrive late into Kisumu, you will need to stay overnight at the New Victoria Hotel in Kisumu at an extra cost of £15 and be transferred to the project the following morning.
You will be transferred back to Kisumu at the end of your programme to catch your return flight home.
If you are unable to arrive or depart on the specified date, you will need to pay a private transfer cost of £35, per person each way. This is payable to Real Gap before departure.
