Kenya Kenya lies astride the equator on the Eastern coast of Africa. Kenya is bordered in the north by Sudan and Ethiopia, in the east by Somalia, on the southeast by the Indian Ocean, on the southwest by Tanzania and to the west by Lake Victoria and Uganda.
Revered by many anthropologists as the ‘cradle of humanity’, Kenya is wild and a natural beauty. If you’ve ever fantasised about Africa – sleeping in the bush surrounded by wildlife and the local Maasai people – then Kenya is for you. For many, Kenya means wildlife. Up to a million wildebeest and zebras cross Southern Kenya on their migration, attracting an entourage of predators. It’s hard to beat the sight of elephants in front of Kilimanjaro, and safari out on foot amongst the natural surroundings of the reserves.
Located close to our Makongeni Camp, 50Kms South of Mombassa, you will be surrounded by authentic Kenyan communities. While the main focus of the programme will be to instigate a number of sports and educative initiatives in Kenyan schools, the programme will also look to provide each team member with a true experience of Kenyan culture. Incorporated into the programme are several trips to key places of interest and cultural learning experiences that will last a lifetime.
Culture The SDX Programme will ensure that each team member will learn all about the unique cultural heritage of Kenya, especially regarding the Maasai tribes. To do this, you will witness many acts of cultural activity, which include dances; fire lighting; jewellery making; village visits and cultural rituals.
Sea The Expedition team will have a few opportunities to visit the local beach (including the camp’s famous beach BBQ’s!). At Diani beach, you have the opportunity to go Scuba diving, jet skiing, kite surfing and even on an aqua safari to spot dolphins and whale sharks.
Safari An extremely popular part of the programme is the 3-day safari to Tsavo National Park. Tsavo National Park is one of the largest game reserves in the world and arguably one of the best. It is home to all of the “Big 5” (Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard and Rhino), with some excellent opportunities for game viewing. Tsavo NP is broken up into 2 areas, Tsavo East and Tsavo West.
On the safari, you will be accommodated in permanent tents that overlook a popular waterhole for elephants. The camp is on the edge of Tsavo East National Park.
Getting There You will need to arrange your flights into Mombassa, Kenya.
