New Zealand

New Zealand is a land of rare and amazing beauty  - glacial mountains, ancient volcanoes, pristine beaches, lush rainforests, erupting geysers and boiling mud pools. It is famous for it’s exhilarating outdoor activities, among them hiking, jet boating, skiing, sky-diving, rafting, swimming with dolphins, whale watching and bungee jumping.

An essential stop on any round the world ticket or a destination in it’s own right – New Zealand is a must see at least once in a lifetime.

Free Time
Your working hours on the project will be from 8am – 4pm and you’ll have your weekends free. In the evenings you can chat to other volunteers, play cards, write your diary, read and generally chill out. Some volunteers bring their CD player with speakers. You may want to bring games with you. This is a fun way to make friends and pass the time.

Free time activities will depend on the location of the project that you are working on, but it is entirely possible that you will be close enough to a city or attraction, to be able to go and sightsee very easily. Your team leaders will know the areas well so will be able to offer you great ideas of what to see and do.

Getting There
You will need to arrange your flight to Auckland to arrive on the Saturday that your programme is due to start. You will receive an airport shuttle transfer to the hostel where you will be spending the next 2 nights.

Arrival
We understand that most of you will be have been travelling for along time when you arrive into Auckland, so spend a few days relaxing and recovering from you jet lag! The hostel is located right in the centre of Auckland making it easy for you to explore the city! There you will also find all the facilities you need under one roof, including a 24 hour reception desk, internet café, two bars, two TV lounges, a laundry room and a fully equipped kitchen.

Onward Travel
If you want to do any kind of paid work when you are in New Zealand, or want to stay for longer than 6 months, you will need to apply for a working holiday visa. This is available for those aged 18-30 and is valid for up either 12 or 23 months depending which option you go for. You can enquire about this by contacting the Real Gap office.
