This Field Guide Course is ideal for people who want to work as a nature guide or field guide in an African reserve or National Park. At the end of your one-year course you will have qualifications that will make you highly sought after in the guiding community.

This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to take time out to live in South Africa and for people who have the desire to learn more about South Africa, its history, fauna, flora and wildlife and pass their knowledge on to others.

The Field Guide Course

This is a one-year course for people wanting to work as a nature guide or field guide in a dangerous game (Big 5) reserve and park. The programme is accredited with the Tourism Hospitality and Sport Education Training Authority (THETA) of South Africa and endorsed by the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA). These accreditations and endorsements set a high standard of education and will make you as a graduate, highly sought after in the guiding community.

5-Month Training Period
The theoretical and practical part of the training will be covered in your first 5 months on the programme. The theoretical training will take place at a training venue overlooking the Kruger National Park and the practical training will be carried out inside a privately owned area located in the South Western section of the Park.

7-Month Work Experience
Your work experience will follow over the next 7 months. During this time you will be employed in either the Kruger National Park or at a reserve in the surrounding area where you will be working as an apprentice guide and will have the chance to carry out open vehicle safaris acting as a guide.  During this time you will be part of a commercial operation so will have to abide to the reserves working policies. A typical work period will be 4 weeks on and 1 week off.

Location

Kruger National Park and surrounding areas, South Africa.

Accommodation and Meals

During the course your accommodation will be at a beautiful tented camp inside the Kruger park. The camp has 25 dome tents, which you will be sharing with one other participant. The tents are made from thick canvas with mosquito gauze over the windows and door, raised on wooden platforms, containing 2 beds and 2 chairs outside on the decking. All of your meals will be catered for by an onsite chef.
