Lake Malawi Medical Volunteer Project
Project Location On the shores of Lake Malawi, close to Monkey Bay
Malawi Malawi, often described as ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’, due to the friendliness of its people, has a huge variety of landscapes. These range from the rugged highlands, such as the hiker’s and climber’s paradise of the Mulanje Massif to lowland plains and unspoilt wildlife reserves. Malawi’s biggest draw is undoubtedly Lake Malawi, Africa’s third largest lake, lined with hundreds of miles of tropical golden sand beaches and boasting hundreds of species of colourful tropical fish.
Weekend Activities There are a few great places to visit during your weekend free time if you feel like exploring around Lake Malawi and beyond, such as National Parks or the Mulanje Massif. Project staff will be more than happy to help you sort out excursions whilst you are in Malawi, so talk to them about your options.
On the other hand, just relaxing around Lake Malawi is also a great option. The village of Cape Maclear is close by and has a few small lodges that offer great snorkelling and scuba diving.
Getting There Flights need to be arranged to arrive into Lilongwe International. On arrival you will be meet by a project rep who will them transfer you by road to the volunteer house just south of Monkey Bay. The transfer will take about 3.5 hours, after which you will be able to settle into your accommodation and meet the other volunteers.
Please Note: If your arrival is outside project start dates, you will have to pay for a private transfer to the accommodation. This will be a fee of US$100 to Francis on arrival in cash.
