Roads to Success in Rio Brazil
|
The community that the project predominantly works within is proud to have the lowest crime rate, the best school and the highest sport activity attendance rate of all the communities in the city. This just goes to show how effective the programme is. A few of the projects that the NGO, which you will be working with, is involved in:
- The Olympic Village - Encourages people to play sports as well as working to increase self-esteem and general health and fitness.
- Health Programme - Runs community based clinics, including a cardiology unit and a psychological unit to give good community health care.
- The ‘house home’ - A home for handicapped teenagers giving them educational and medical assistance as well as working towards the integration of the disabled into sports.
- Education - Numerous education projects working with children from a pre-school age right up to free college education in association with a local university. The project gives free education to all age groups.
- Culture and Professional Centres - Provides workshops from leisure activities to handicrafts to educational courses, some examples being ballet, choirs, English language, making costume jewellery, crochet and many more.
Volunteer RoleWhat you are asked to do on a day-to-day basis will depend on the needs of the project at the time, however you can expect to be involved in activities such as:
- Coaching sports
- Teaching English
- Promoting leisure activities with children
- Teaching and helping at the handcraft activities
