Lion Breeding and Conservation Zimbabwe
|
A typical day on the project
- 06.15 Meet for lion walks. This can involve collecting data or just taking the cubs out with the other volunteers, playing with them or observing them practising their stalking skills, chasing and attempting to catch prey out in the bush
- 08.30 Breakfast: Discuss your morning walks with the other volunteers
- 09.30 Morning activities: snare sweeps, boundary patrols, baby feeding, meat preparation and cub feeding or cleaning enclosures. Maybe a horse lesson or ride, or another lion walk. Jobs here are varied and there’s always something springing up to keep you busy and on your toes
- 13.00 Lunch
- 14.30 Any feeding, enclosure cleaning, fence making or an elephant swim or ride
- 16.30 Lion Walk – Accompanying a client walk or going on a volunteer-only walk
- 18.30 A meeting with your Project Managers, discussing the events of the day and your jobs for the following day
- 19.00 Dinner and stargazing to see the Southern Hemisphere in all its glory for miles around. Also experience night encounters with the older lions, watching them stalk and chase and often kill game or enjoy drinks in the lounge and just generally chill out
