Kenya Maasai and Wildlife Volunteer
The project is divided into two-week blocks, working with Maasai communities in two separate areas of Kenya; at the foot of the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro and walking the vast, serene plains of the savannas where the Big 5 roam freely.
Big Cat Conservation Spend your time in Africa helping to secure the future of the continent’s big cats. Help monitor their numbers through tracks and markings, understanding big cat behaviour and their natural environment in the wild, whilst also understanding how the local communities can learn to live in mutual harmony with these beautiful mammals.
Elephant and Wildlife Conservation Help to secure the future of the elephants of Africa. Monitor their numbers and collect important data of sightings, markings and identifying each elephant, observing their behaviour and environment in the wild and also understanding how humans can then live in mutual harmony with these beautiful mammals.
You will be working alongside a Maasai guide and assisting local Maasai communities living outside the National Park. Elephants are really under threat from poaching and as a result of their threat to the livestock and farmland of local farmers. Both man and elephants are competing for the same land space. This project is vital in bridging these difficulties and risks, to develop a mutually beneficial relationship between both man and animal. During your project, you will take part in the following activities:
- Elephant data collection with community game scouts
- Tracking and recording elephants and other wildlife
- Counting and recording elephant numbers a
- Occasionally, you may be encouraged to help with conservation education, building and working in schools and medical clinics.
