Spend your time volunteering at an orphanage and helping out with the medical community development programme. Assist the varied work of the Community Hospital, which provides medical aid to a wide community at the southern end of Lake Malawi.

Malawi Medical Volunteers

Volunteer Role

This is the ideal project for medical students (preferably second year or above) or anyone one with medical qualifications looking for experience in health care in lesser developed nations. Volunteers who do not have medical experience will spend their time on equally worthy work with young orphans in the Monkey Bay area.

The general duties that you may assist with here include:

  • 1. Under five clinics
    Weighing the under five children
    Screening
    Giving different immunisations
    Growth monitoring
    Health talks
  • 2. Water and Sanitation Programmes
    Inspection of boreholes and pit latrines
    Health education
    Motivation for more pit latrines
    Supplying cement for pit lining
    Sanitation data analysis
    Training village health committees in water and sanitation
  • 3. HIV/ AIDS awareness
    Health talks in the communities
    Drama performances on HIV/AIDS
    Home-based care support programmes
  • 4. Food and Nutrition
    Screening
    Health education on the importance of food groups
    Referral those severely malnourished
    Giving food supplements (if any)
  • 5. TB Programme
    Screening of cases
    TB medication according to regimen
    Patient follow-ups (in villages)
    Sputum checks

What’s Included in the Programme

  • Project Fee: this entails financing that goes directly back into the project you are involved with. This project fee facilitates funding for items such as building materials, equipment, supplies, foodstuffs etc.
  • Airport transfers to and from Lilongwe International Airport
  • Orientation on arrival
  • All accommodation during your stay at shared volunteer house
  • Full support and assistance from your co-ordinator throughout your time in Malawi
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner each day
  • 24-hour support number and contact for emergencies

What’s Not Included in the Programme

  • Personal travel insurance for the duration of your placement, which should include cover for repatriation
  • All flights
  • Private Airport Transfers if arriving outside of the specified dates, at the cost of US$150 in cash, per person, per transfer
  • Any extra nights of accommodation at the volunteer house: this costs US$20 per night
  • All items of a personal nature, such as curios, gifts, clothing (work and other)
  • E-mail/Internet and telephone calls
  • Public transport to and from the community hospital when necessary
  • Soft drinks, beer, wines and spirits
  • Visas
  • Any excursions over and above your planned itinerary in Malawi
