Gap Year Brochure

Malawi, often described as 'the warm heart of Africa', due to the friendliness of its people, and a huge variety of landscapes. These range from the rugged highlands, such as hikers and climbers paradise of the Mulanje Massif to lowland plains and unspoilt wildlife reserves. Malawi's biggest draw is undoubtedly Lake Malawi, Africa's third largest lake, lined with hundreds of miles of tropical golden sand beaches and boasting hundreds of species of tropical fish.

Real Gap's Malawi Highlights

Malawi, a landlocked country, lies deep within the Great African Rift Valley system; Lake Malawi is the county's grand centrepiece. The Lake is fringed by tropical palms and never-ending beaches and surrounded by rugged mountains; visitors will be in no doubt of why they chose to visit.

The City of Lilongwe
This city is divided in two, like many, it has the old town made up of bustling markets and African shops and the new developments. The new developments include shopping centres, hypermarkets hotels and restaurants. There are many attractions just a short drive from the city including game reserves, wildlife parks and beaches.

Monkey Bay
Is found on the southern shores of Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa), there is a small lake port and harbour. This bay is simply breathtaking, if you took part in our Malawi Sports Coaching and Teaching project you could give something back to the communities whilst spending your free time exploring and relaxing in Monkey bay.

Lake Malawi
The communities living on the southern coast of Lake Malawi need your help, Malawi is currently one of the poorest countries in the world, so consider helping to make people better on our Lake Malawi Medical Volunteer Project. (Ideally suited to medical students, or volunteers with medical qualifications, but no medical experience is necessary) You could really help the Community Hospital provide medical aid.

Map of Malawi

In Malawi there are roughly 150 pupils to one permanent teacher! Help us to give the children a better education and improve their futures by taking part in our Lake Malawi Teaching Volunteer programme.
