Real Gap's Malaysia Highlights
The city of Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur is at the forefront of modern high-tech and fast growing cities and is perfect to explore before of after your work as a volunteer in Malaysia. Most of our programmes in Malaysia include a night stay and dinner in Kuala Lumpur to help you get to know the capital city better and on both the Zoo Assistant programme and the Orang-utan Experience programme there are options to work on the outskirts of the city.
Borneo Borneo has to be the real highlight of Malaysia! Stunning beauty surrounds Borneo, home to the world's oldest rainforest and an abundance of wildlife including the infamous orang-utan.
We have three projects which get you close the wildlife and the people of Borneo. As a volunteer on the Pygmy Elephant and Orang-utan Conservation programme you will get involved in the conservation of orang-utans, proboscis monkeys and the rare pygmy elephants of Borneo. This is a rare chance to observe and work with these unique creatures. Volunteers on the Borneo Tribes-children and Horse project can share the culture of a rural Bornean community whilst teaching children at the local school, and riding and training the village horses. On the Orang-utan Experience programme you can work with orang-utans in a Malaysian Zoo before heading into the Borneo jungle to monitor these great apes in the wild!
Sarawak Sarawak is a rural area of northern Malaysia largely untouched by tourism and is the base for our Borneo Tribes-children project. The project here encompasses eco-conscious and responsible travel perfectly, the farm is classified as almost 100% eco-friendly. Local materials are used for building and food is grown entirely organically.
Perhentian Islands The Perhentian Islands are sandy tropical islands several miles from the mainland of Malaysia. Our Turtle Conservation Dive programme is based on a remote cove on the Perhentian Islands which is a natural nesting area for the green turtles you will be working to protect.
