Mongolia Travel Advice
|

|
Mongolia - stirs up visions of the wild and the untamed - the warlord Genghis Khan, camels strolling in the Gobi Desert and wild horses galloping across the steppes. Mongolia still seems like the end of the earth and only when you have been encompassed by its vastness do you begin to wonder if you have stepped into another century, rather than another country. Mongolia is not only famous for its interesting landscapes but its climate is well known to be full of extremes, hot summers and freezing winters. It currently remains one of the few great adventure destinations in Asia.

Real Gap's Mongolia Highlights
The City of Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar showcases perfectly the contrast of modern life and traditional mongolian lifestyle, the city is described as sunny, peaceful and open. The city houses almost half of the nation's population and it is as urban as any soviet city, be assured though; the spirit and the energy of the city is very different today.

Mongolia has an outdoorsy culture, hikers are welcome to explore nearby Khentii and Bogd mountains. Those who enjoy the social aspect of travel will have a great time in Mongolia, the summer gatherings outside of the city, which often include jazz concerts, dancing, and conversation around the bonfire will give you an insight into the rich Mongolian culture.
There is so much to see in Mongolia its hard to know where to start, so why not give something back and Volunteer in Mongolia, work with children and orphans who live in what has become one of the poorest countries in the world; from here you could discover the city of Ulaanbaatar in your free time and then onwards to explore the Gobi Desert!
Gobi Desert
The Gobi is not a complete desert, a common mistake made by many travellers. It encompasses 33 different ecosystems of which only 3% is true desert. The dramatic cliffs, spectacular valleys, deep rolling sand dunes, make the ancient Gobi one of the world's most unusual deserts. You will see many hundreds of wild and domestic camels, cranes, hawks and gazelles, there is plenty of evidence that dinosaurs once roamed the region! Mongolian nomads populate South Mongolia, they live in small round huts looking after their herds which graze in the areas where vegetation is dense.
Kara-Hot If you have time and are willing to take a chance, visit Kara-hot (The Black & Dead) city, it is the oldest known city in the Gobi Desert. Around the 17th century, the city was lost to Mongols in the war. The legend tells us that Kara-hot possessed a lot of wealth and when it was under attack, many glorious treasures were hidden inside one of the wells. Visit if you dare!
