Namibia

Namibia is situated in southern Africa on the Atlantic coast. It is known for its contrasting landscapes, the desolate Namib Desert is said to be the oldest in the world, with its high dunes and awe-inspiring sense of space. While the central plateau, with its thorn bush savannah and rugged mountains, rising abruptly from the plains, gives way to the majestic Fishriver Canyon in the south.

In the north of the country, landscapes range from dense bush and open plains of the great Etosha Pan, to woodland savannah and lush vegetation. Dinosaur footprints preserved in sandstone, prehistoric rock art, the ancient fossil plant, Welwitschia mirabilis, all bare witness to the timelessness of this country.

Weather
Namibia experiences its warmer weather during the months of September to April with the average temperatures between 17-30°C in December and January. However, the wettest time of year is January to March while there is little to no precipitation from May to September.

Free Time
The project is based in a remote area of Namibia in a beautiful and quite stunning African location where you will only make very occasional trips into the closest town for supplies. Therefore, you must pack for the entire duration of your trip. Your free time will consist of a well-deserved lie-in and a visit to the animal welfare foundation to meet the team and join on a ‘behind the scenes’ feeding-run of over 100 big cats.

You will hopefully come away with a better understanding of what you are helping towards and how the welfare centre aids predator and farmer alike. Evenings will be based around the campfire listening to the sounds of the wild and reliving your day.

After all your hard work at the project and once it has finished, you will be driven back to the airport, where you can either fly home, or take part in an amazing tour of Namibia and the stunning desert dunes, and even travel through the other surrounding countries – an opportunity not to be missed! These tours can last for anything from 3 days to 30 or more, so please ask the Africa team for further information.

Getting There
You will need to fly to Hosea Kutako Airport in Windhoek, where you will be met by our African coordinators and transferred to the project. Here you will receive an introduction and orientation before beginning your programme.
