Namibia Medical Volunteer
Working in public hospitals, or medical clinics in remote areas of the Namibian countryside, you’ll provide valuable support to local doctors and, in the case of qualified medical volunteers, diagnose and treat anything from simple injuries to life threatening illnesses. This is not only a hugely rewarding project, but also a terrific way to experience the rich culture of one of Africa’s most alluring countries.
Volunteer placements are split between the public hospital, private doctors, clinics in the town and small rural medical clinics located close to traditional African villages. Your role will depend on your medical experience.
Volunteers who have little or no medical training can give valuable support to local doctors and nurses who, for their part, will offer guidance and advice. Accomplished and qualified medical volunteers may be required to diagnose and treat illness and injuries ranging from simple to life threatening. Experienced staff may also help the project coordinators to guide other, less qualified medical volunteers.
Volunteer Role
Some of the work that you may be involved with includes assisting the doctors or nurses in the following areas:
- Working in a mobile hospital that visits rural villages
- Tending to patients while they wait to see a doctor
- Helping to care for new born babies
- Bandaging of wounds
- Carrying patients to the doctors for consultation
- Providing general service to hospital and clinic patients
- Offering practical assistance to the doctors and nurses
LocationVolunteers will live and work in northern Namibia’s exotic Caprivi Region. Both the Chobe National Park in Botswana and the famous Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe are easily accessible from the region’s capital Katima Mulilo.
Accommodation and MealsParticipants volunteering close to Katima Mulilo will be staying in a comfortable backpacker-style house run by our on-site coordinators. You will share a room and bathroom with up to three of your fellow volunteers. Food will be provided, but you will be expected to prepare your own meals.
Those volunteering at a rural medical clinic will be accommodated at a tented safari camp at Bwabwata National Park. Tents sleep two people with beds, clean duvet & linen are provided. You'll be provided 3 meals a day.
