This project provides you with a rare and exciting opportunity to work closely with the animals of Africa and care for them on a daily basis. During your time in Namibia, you will be involved in caring for the welfare of animals that have been injured or orphaned in Africa.

The main aim of this programme is to serve as a soft release area for animals that have been successfully rehabilitated at the Noah’s Ark project, 300kms East of Windhoek.

Volunteer Role

You can expect to work physically hard on this project. Currently the enclosures, waterholes and other infrastructures are under construction, with Marlice and her team of Bushman handling things. You must be prepared to work in the bush under the African sun getting stuck in digging holes, erecting fences and building new enclosures.

During your stay, you will experience some of the following activities:
  • Building enclosures
  • Relocation of animals
  • Participating in the capture and darting of animals for relocations that would otherwise be shot and destroyed
  • Working towards completing the Charity lodge
  • Participating in the hospitality section of lodge
  • Record keeping of animal arrivals and treatments
  • Assisting in collecting data and conveying results to relevant organisations
  • Wildlife rehabilitation
  • Feeding animals, cleaning enclosures, tending to sick or injured animals and maintenance of the farm.
  • Night walks and camping in the bush at night

Location

Based just 38km East of Windhoek in Namibia and 15km from the International airport, this programme has been supported and converted through funding by the new patron, Angelina Jolie, to become a 10,000 hectare release site.

Accommodation and meals

As this is a new project, until the summer of 2007, you will be staying in a very comfortable tented lodge. The tents are large, sleeping up to 5-6 volunteers per tent. There is also a bathroom that includes a shower and toilet. The new volunteer house (finished in July 07) has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.

Throughout your stay, you will have access to a communal kitchen and will be responsible for cooking your meals as part of a group. All of your meal costs are included in the project fee. There is also a communal laundry and dining area that overlooks the vast plains of this fantastic project site.
