Name: Natasha Swanson
Programme: Rajasthan Desert Project
Dates: 01 - 31 October 2006

How did you feel before you joined the programme?
I was anxious as this was the very first thing on my gap year agenda, so I had a thousand questions and queries. The guys at Real Gap were really patient and informative; Katie has genuine enthusiasm for India and the work being done by the project, and this really gave me confidence.

What was the accommodation like?
I loved staying with the host family in Jaipur; the family were exceptionally welcoming, and the food was delicious! There's a poignant difference between the luxuries of home and the bare necessities of India, which was humbling to experience first hand. The accommodation at the camp was even more challenging; we all thought it was hysterical that our huts were made of dried poo…..(not sure if it comes from a camel or a cow!)….but at the end of a hard, hot day there's a clean bed, fresh water and a completely unique desert-view that you could never otherwise replicate.

How was your experience in the destination(s) that you travelled to with Real Gap?
Honestly, this was the single most rewarding travelling experience I have ever had. It was not always easy, but looking back I learnt so much and saw such a vast scope of human and geographical beauty…that I will always value this adventure very highly.

How have you benefited from your experience?
The Rajasthan project has taught me two key things; Firstly, to be very grateful for being born into a relatively safe and wealthy country.. And secondly that the human spirit (especially that of Rajasthan's smiling children) can rise above all adversity.

What advice could you offer to someone considering this project?
Pack insect repellent, light - loose clothes & an open mind, and you'll have the time of your life.

Were you pleased you went with Real Gap?
Real Gap are reliable, friendly and professional, I would recommend them whole heartedly.
