Community Volunteer Projects
Teaching in a local school You will have the opportunity to help the local community by teaching children English and Maths in a local school. This volunteer programme provides an excellent opportunity to work with children and contribute to the local communities in a positive way. The children are really keen to learn English as this enhances their future employment opportunities.
You don’t need previous experience but you will need to be creative to make learning English fun for the children, past volunteers have taught by:
- Using word association games
- Drawing pictures of animals/people
- Singing (eg “head shoulders, knees & toes!”)
- Teaching colours, days of the week, months of the year etc
You will receive information, tips and suggestions from us and also when you arrive on what and how to teach. As well as teaching English you can help with other classes and activities such as Maths, sports and games. Being creative about learning makes in school activities fun and interesting, giving the children an animated lesson.
Location We have 5 placement schools in Kathmandu, 7 in Chitwan and 4 in Pokhara. You will receive full details of your school placement on arrival.
Orphanage Project This project offers you the opportunity to not only help teach children but you are able to motivate and enrich the lives of young people. The orphanage provides housing, food and teaching materials for all poor students. You will find this a worthwhile project if you are patient, caring and compassionate.
As a volunteer you will be:
- Teaching English on a non formal basis
- Creating activities for the students including workshops for cultural exchange
- Sports after classes
Location There are three orphanages to choose from, they are all a 15 – 30 minute bus / taxi ride from Kathmandu. There are up to 40 children in each ranging from 6 to 14 years old. Email and Internet facilities are within 10 minutes walk of each.
Teaching in a Monastery and Learning Buddhism Nepal is the birthplace of Buddha and Buddhism. Though predominantly a Hindu country, Nepal has a significant Buddhist influence and the beautiful monasteries all over Nepal show how popular Buddhism is in Nepal. In Kathmandu, Tibetan people who are in exile in Nepal also practice Buddhism. Volunteers interested in working in a Buddhist monastery will mostly teach English to monks and immerse themselves in the Buddhist culture. This is a perfect choice if you are interested in Buddhism and the life of Buddhist monks.
As a volunteer you will be…
- Working as an English instructor in schools of the Tibetan Children’s Village
- Teaching for 3-4 hours a day
- Assist in extra-curricular activities and administration
- Organise games, drawing, singing, dancing and other creative education
- You can join in with meditation, rituals, prayers and songs if you wish.
Though no teaching experience or skills are necessary, volunteers joining the Buddhist monk teaching programmes in Nepal should have good written and verbal English. Volunteers are expected to be flexible and patient.
Location During volunteering in the Buddhist monastery, volunteers will stay in a hostel (mostly located inside the compound of the temple school). This hostel also acts as a home for monks and children. A separate room and shared bath will be arranged for volunteers.
Accommodation and Meals You will live with a local family in the village relevant to your placement. If you would prefer to stay in hotel accommodation this can be arranged but we be an extra cost. In a typical placement you will stay with a local family and eat Nepali food twice a day - 9am breakfast/lunch and 7pm dinner. Tea is served in the morning and also in the afternoon. You may also have the opportunity to get together with other volunteers and share your experiences. You will be able to travel to nearby towns to purchase things for daily use and could travel to other areas of Nepal for longer if you wish.
Please note: Most village families in Nepal don’t have a flushing toilet and use water rather than toilet paper, however it fine for you to take toilet paper with you. A flush toilet can be arranged but please inform us upon booking so we can organise this for you.
Project Support You will have an English speaking coordinator for your orientation who will continue to visit you every other week and will call to check how you are. In addition you will have our 24-hour emergency number for access to our UK staff.
Project Orientation You will be met at the airport, taken to a hotel, and then transferred to a local village for your 4-day orientation which will include:
- Language lessons
- Cultural issues / gender issues / local food
- Placement information and information on teaching English
- Sightseeing
