Today, there are probably no more than 20,000 wild Orang-utans remaining and their numbers are declining daily. The exploitation of tropical rainforest for timber coupled with the introduction of large-scale palm plantations, gold mining and poaching for the black market have all contributed to the loss of Orang-utans.

The Volunteer Programme

On this programme you will have the unique opportunity to work closely with Orang-utans in a Malaysian Zoo for 15 days, take part in a 2 day visit to a Wildlife Centre to see Orang-utans in rehabilitation before heading to the Borneo jungle to even monitor these great apes in the wild.

Working alongside trained experts and the indigenous tribes-people of Borneo, volunteers work to conserve orang-utans in both their natural environment and those living in captivity. The project aims to help the local Iban-tribes people make orang-utans an integral part of the local economy through eco-tourism routes.

The highlights of the programme include:

  • Spend 15 days working in a Zoo in Taiping or Kuala Lumpur working closely with primates of which Orang-utans are the main focus. Activities include feeding, cleaning and enriching life of primates.
  • 2 day visit to Matang Wildlife Centre with our expert staff - see Orang-utans in rehabilitation before being released to the wild.  Learn about how the centre works and understand Orang-utan behaviour.
  • Travel to Batang Ai and then upriver to the Iban longhouses on the edge of the Indonesian Malaysian border where Orang-utans roam free and pristine rainforest still survivies away from loggers and modern civilisation.
  • Monitor the apes in the wild, deepest darkest Borneo jungle where Orang-utans roam free, carry out nest counts, and collect and record insects.
  • Help local Ibans make Orang-utans an intergral part of the local economy through ecotourism projects.

Project Location

You will stay for 1 night in Kuala Lumpur, 15 nights in your zoo accommodation, 3 nights in Kuching, 7 nights in Batang Ai before spending your last night back in Kuching.

Accommodation and Meals

You will be based in 3 different places during your project in Malaysia. You will begin in Kuala Lumpur on your first night before moving to your zoo accommodation. You will spend 15 nights at the zoo, before travelling to Kuching for the next 3 nights, then 7 nights in Batang Ai, before returning to Kuching for your final night.

Accommodation will include a guest house in Kuala Lumpur, a three bedroom house or boutique hostel depending upon which Zoo you are at and basic longhouse wooden lodges next to the Iban village on the Batang Ai stage of the project. Most meals are included or you will receive a weekly allowance to buy food, but expect to buy the occassional meal.
