The Volunteer Programme You will be based on the working ranch for the duration of your trip. You will be involved in hands-on activities include participation in chores, trail riding, horse wrangling, cattle gathering, branding and cattle drives. You will be carefully matched with a horse based on your riding experience and your goals for your 3-week project. The project will be tailored to your riding ability and interests as often as possible.
Volunteers will also participate in activities with weekly groups who visit the ranch from Sunday to Friday each week. These activities include vet days (vaccinating horses), trail riding, riding fence (inspecting and replacing fences that local wildlife damage), moving cattle, clinics, riding with groups of youths, adults and parents. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to participate in additional activities including longer rides, trips to town and special clinics that run over the weekends.
You will have the amazing opportunity to ride and bond with your horse each day on the ranch. You will also complete the chores associated with riding, as a team. During your 3 week volunteer placement you will truly get to experience the Western lifestyle and country from the back of a horse.
Less than an hour’s drive from Cody, you may enjoy easy day rides from ranch headquarters or faster paced, tougher rides into the high country, trailing the remuda (horses), or moving the cattle. When you return, remove the legacy of the dusty trail with a hot shower and take a break from the saddle to see the Cody Nite Rodeo, or soak in the World's Largest Hot Springs in Thermopolis.
At headquarters, stay in the Brown cabins, dating from the turn of the century, where the founders lived after they moved to Grass Creek in 1941. Camp in homesteads, dating from the late 1800s, when they emigrated from Scotland into this territory with their band of sheep. They then built it into one of the premier sheep, cattle and horse ranches in the country. On overnight trips and day rides, stay at Prospect Cow Camp, homesteaded in the late 1800s by an enterprising couple who changed the Grass Creek channel, covered the spring, and set up a still under the rim that overlooked the Big Cottonwoods and their one-room cabin.
The ranch is known for its peaceful setting. Just like in the movies you will experience scenic rides, cool evenings, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, campfires and stories.
