Project Location
New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

Louisiana
Louisiana is located in the south of the USA on the Gulf of Mexico. The area (before it became a state) was known as “New France” and was named Louisiana for Louis XIV. The French influence is still noticeable, especially in New Orleans, the state’s largest city and in the naming of the state capital – Baton Rouge. The state even has residents that speak Cajun French and Louisiana Creole French and boasts its own Cajun cuisine. New Orleans itself is said to be the birthplace of Jazz. Located along the banks of the Mississippi river, New Orleans, named for Philippe II, Duc d’Orleans (French regent) is said to be one of the oldest of all the US’ cities.

Climate
Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate, which equates to short, mild winters and long, hot, humid summers. Average temperatures are around 32C in the summer and 19C in the winter, so you’re not likely to ever get cold in Louisiana (unless you’re in the very north!). Because of its location on the Gulf of Mexico, the state gets quite a lot of rain, as well as frequent thunderstorms in the summer. As has been seen in the last few years, the area is vulnerable to hurricanes in the coastal areas whereas inland, tornadoes are more of a problem – there is an average of 27 of them annually!

Weekend Travel
Volunteers are free to enjoy travel around the city on the weekends. As you have an optional day of work on Friday you are free to take a 3-day weekend allowing you plenty of time to see the amazing sights that New Orleans has to offer.

Getting There
You will need to arrange your flights to New Orleans International Airport. Upon arrival you will take a shuttle service to the volunteer house where you will be met by the volunteer coordinator.
