Project Location
The project is based in the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Rio de Janeiro
Rio, called ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’ (‘Marvellous City’) by its residents, is Brazil’s second largest city and its most famous. The city is sandwiched between the sea and the jungle-covered mountains, giving it the most beautiful setting, and with the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Rio is certainly a feast for the eyes. The most famous landmarks, known the world over, are the Corcovado – the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer that looms over the city and also Sugar Loaf Mountain, both of which offer spectacular views of the city as it sprawls out to the North and South along the coast.

Although it isn’t known for it, Rio also has a great architectural heritage hidden amongst all the newly built skyscrapers – discovering them is half the fun of exploring the city.

Pernambuco
The Brazilian state of Pernambuco is located in the northeasterly region of the country, and it is this state that the city of Recife is the capital. Pernambuco is thought to be a centre of culture and has some unique practices and festivals.

With 114 miles of coastline and some of Brazil’s most beautiful beaches (particularly Porto de Galinhas, Carneiros and Calhetas), the so-called most beautiful urban area in Brazil, Recife’s Boa Viagem area and Olinda (full of old European architecture) as well as Brazil’s most beautiful archipelago, Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco has a lot to offer any traveller.

Climate
Thanks to its proximity to the equator, Recife and Pernambuco get year round sunshine and average temperatures of 26C, the humidity kept at bay by the refreshing trade winds blowing in off the ocean – so really everyday is a beach day! June and July (‘winter’) get the heaviest rainfall and November and December the least (only 20mm!).

Free Time
The people of Rio pride themselves on the fact that their city has so much to keep visitors busy. You must work a minimum of 10 hours a week on the project, in the morning or in the afternoon, but of course you can work as much as you like. Either way you have plenty of time to explore the city. Take the cable car up Sugar Loaf Mountain or hitch a ride up to the Statue of Christ the Redeemer, both providing superb views of the city, the beaches and out over the Atlantic. The beaches themselves are great for relaxing, swimming or playing volleyball and football.

The weekends are for you to spend as you wish and are a good time to head a bit further out of the city to explore the surrounding area. The beaches in either direction along the coast are definitely worth exploring - both beautiful and deserted!

Getting There
You will need to arrange your flights into Rio, Brazil. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your accommodation.
