The most popular type of plane ticket used by gap year travellers is undoubtedly a ‘round the world' ticket. A round the world plane ticket enables the traveller to literally circle the globe, stopping off at pre-chosen countries en route, at a price which is often not a great deal more expensive than say a standard return ticket to Australia.
How does a round the world ticket work?
|
You can start your journey either by flying in a westerly or an easterly direction. However, the golden rule to bear in mind with a round the world plane ticket is that you must always continue in one direction without going back on yourself.
A number of different airlines offer round the world tickets, and your choice of airline is likely to be influenced by where you wish to stop. As a general rule the more stopovers you wish to make the more expensive your round the world will be. If you have a particularly complicated round the world itinerary it may be necessary to use more than one airline or buy some extra flight add-ons. For example, if you wanted to fly to Vietnam after Thailand the easiest way of doing this would be to add on a separate return ticket between Bangkok and Vietnam. If your planned itinerary is fairly straight forward, though, then a standard round the world ticket should suffice.

Where can I go on a round the world?
Within reason you can go anywhere on a round the world although, as explained above, the more complicated your itinerary then the more expensive it is likely to be. A very popular route is to fly to Thailand, travel overland down through Malaysia and Singapore, fly on to Indonesia, then fly through Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific islands, the USA and back to the UK. Where you go and what you do on a round the world is totally up to you, but it serves as a good example as to how much is possible just on one plane ticket.
How long can I be away on a round the world?
As a general rule round the world tickets are valid for one year from your first date of travel. However, some tickets are valid one year from their date of issue so you do need to be careful about the rules of a ticket before you pay for it - especially if you do plan to be away the entire year. It's important to buy a ticket offering free date changes or, at least, date changes for a small administration fee. If you're backpacking round the world for a year it's highly likely that your plans and time-scales will change along the way, so it really pays to have a flexible round the world ticket.
