Sea Turtle and Caiman Volunteer Guatemala
Project Location The project is located near the small village of Hawaii on the Pacific coast of Guatemala, eight kilometers from the resort of Monterrico.
Guatemala Guatemala, in the Mayan heartland, is Central America’s best-kept secret. As well as lively markets and world famous colourful textiles, it boasts the highest and most active volcanoes and outstanding natural beauty, from rugged mountains to tropical rainforests. There is an intriguing mix of cultures, influenced by a turbulent and fascinating past. Locals take pride in their traditions and many still wear the colourful intricately handcrafted costumes of their ancestors. If it’s culture you are after then Guatemala is the place for you.
Weather The south coast climate is generally dryer than the Caribbean coast. During the dry season - December to April - it rarely rains. The rainy season on the south coast is between June and October and is not as heavy as in other parts of Guatemala, with most rainfall coming in the late afternoon.
The turtle laying and hatching season is during the rainy season, with the heaviest activity in August and September. The hot months are March-April. The weather in November, December and January is glorious! Clear, breezy and cool with clear, starry skies full of meteor showers at night!
Free time Free times are evenings and weekends. Volunteers can go fishing with locals, hunt wild honey, climb the Tecuamburro Volcano, go mangrove kayaking or bird watching, amongst other things. Many volunteers who travel to Guatemala visit Antigua first. Antigua is a beautiful colonial city only 45 minutes from Guatemala City and is a nice place to get acclimated and use as a base to travel to other parts of the country.
Getting There You will need to fly to Guatemala City airport where you will be met and taken to a hotel in Antigua for two nights. You will then be picked up from the hotel and transferred to the project site.
