Senegal Community Volunteer
Senegal is an excellent place to volunteer in a French-speaking country. It is a fantastic environment to experience West Africa's culture and take part in a volunteer programme. It is one of Africa's safest countries and has many worthwhile cultural volunteer programmes.
Our Senegal volunteer projects are based on the idea of providing voluntary service to disadvantaged people and communities. It is also about exchanging knowledge and cultures, both for the locals and for the volunteers. Volunteer placements are available in Dakar (the capital) the surrounding areas and also St Louis in the north. This is an extremely rewarding volunteer experience in one of Africa's fastest growing gap year volunteer destinations.
There are a variety of projects available for a volunteer in Senegal. These volunteer projects work with disadvantaged communities and provide an insight into different cultures and the challenges faced in developing countries. Your experience will be even more authentic, as you will stay with a Senegalese family who will provide you with a warm welcome.
Volunteer Role
The type of volunteer projects that you may join include:
- Teaching English in Senegal schools and villages
- Helping care for orphaned babies and vulnerable children
- Vocational teaching such as crafts, dressmaking, batik dyeing etc.
- Care for disabled children
- HIV/AIDS awareness and education
- Helping with physiotherapy, or psychotherapy
- Monitoring and care of animals in a zoo
- Agricultural and irrigation projects
- Journalism
Project Location
The Senegal programmes are largely based within the capital city of Dakar and surrounding areas or the smaller town of St Louis, north of Dakar.
Accommodation and Meals
Volunteers stay with local host families where they will also have meals. On some projects this may be really basic. You will however have a really authentic experience and the host families are chosen for their ability to offer a welcoming home.
