During your programme you'll get the chance to see some of South Africa's most spectacular sights whilst having the opportunity to get involved in community conservation and environmental initiatives.
During your Big 5 conservation project you will experience some of the following:
Feeding and interacting with Africa’s Big 5 animals including elephants and lions
There are 10-15 lions at the project. Occasionally there will be the opportunity to bottle feed some of the lion cubs at the predator centre on the programme. Over time the lions that are cared for at the project are released into various game reserves, taking part in an activity like this will leave you with a huge feeling of satisfaction. You will also be able to assist with tracking, monitoring and possibly relocating the wildlife in the game reserve.
Caring for lions and elephants in the reserve’s sanctuary
This project gives you the chance to observe elephant’s natural behaviour in the game reserve as well as feed the elephants, a wonderful opportunity to get close to these amazing animals. During your time on the programme you will be able to learn from experienced field guides who will take you on game drives and help explain the animal behaviour you will see in the game reserve.
Fauna and flora related environmental initiatives
One project aim is to both rehabilitate and develop the environment, with long term structures that will allow the land to flourish naturally again. Part of this project will also mean taking part in essential reserve maintenance such as; bush clearing and, checking fence lines and making repairs. This is a vital part of the programme to protect the wildlife at the reserve. This will also give you the chance to learn much more about the plant life that you will find in a game reserve and how it affects that wildlife that live on the land.
Throughout your stay on the programme you will gain detailed knowledge and understanding of the African bush. You will have free time to explore the local area or just chill out on the stunning golden beaches nearby.
Your role will be to make a difference by assisting the project in conservation efforts both with the land as well as the variety of game and wild animals. You may also have the opportunity to help with community projects as and when needed.
Please note: The activities that you will be involved in can be affected by the weather, time of year, and of course the temperament of the animals, so please approach the programme with a flexible mind.
