South Africa Chimpanzee Sanctuary

This is an extremely exciting project, allowing you the opportunity to volunteer and train alongside our closest relative, the chimpanzee. This programme is endorsed by Jane Goodall, a leading pioneer in primate research and offers you the chance to work at a large and internationally recognised rehabilitation sanctuary for chimpanzees.

A private wildlife reserve, close to the Kruger National Park, South Africa.

£195 (balance due 12 wks before departure)

Accommodation:

Purpose built volunteer camp.

Meals:

3 meals a day.

Dates:

Starts 1st Monday of each month.

Your Typical Itinerary

Your Typical Day on the Project
During your one month chimpanzee experience you will have a five and a half day week. Your days will be well structured and organised, though may vary according to the programmes needs. Therefore, please use this itinerary below as a guideline only:

  • Wake up early and head down to the sanctuary
  • Alongside staff members, prepare the chimpanzees for the day. For example: feeding, watering, cleaning enclosures, health checks and general maintenance of enclosures etc
  • Breakfast
  • Class time and course theory
  • Practical experience at the sanctuary and monitoring of the chimpanzees
  • Lunchtime at the camp
  • Some further classroom activities, practical training with the chimps or some bush conservation experience
  • Go back to the sanctuary in the late afternoon/early evening to prepare the chimpanzees for the night: Feeding and preparing enclosures etc
  • Dinner and relaxation at the camp with your fellow volunteers
