South Africa Football Coaching

Trip code: SAFC

In recent years South Africa's standing in world football has improved dramatically, winning the African Nations Cup in 1996 and qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 1998. In 2010 interest will increase as the World Cup comes to the African continent and to South Africa for the first time. You can coach the next generation of players from a country that has already brought the likes of Steven Pienaar (Everton) and Benni McCarthy (Blackburn Rovers) to the English Premier League. The townships in the area surrounding Port Elizabeth are full of keen and often talented young players and while the passion never fades, the opportunities to play and develop in a well-structured environment are very limited.

Choose the 14 week option starting on 10th April 2010 and it will include accommodation and meals during the Football World Cup, South Africa, 2010. Experience World Cup fever in South Africa with Port Elizabeth hosting seven matches during your time there, including the 3rd/4th place play-off! Please note that transport and World Cup tickets are not included. Contact the Africa team for further details.

Football in Port Elizabeth

Anybody who has a passion for playing or coaching football will have an amazing experience on this programme. As long as you have some understanding of the game you will be able to offer great assistance to the children that you will coach, whether you just play socially with friends, have represented your school, club or university team or even as far as holding coaching qualifications. By coaching these children you will start to give enthusiastic these players the chance to play the sport they love in an organised and fun environment.

As a coach the first part of your programme will be to help organise and run training clinics and matches for the children in the townships that skirt the city of Port Elizabeth, as well as providing them with decent football equipment. During this time you will not only start to form relationship with the players but also help improve your confidence in your role. The second part of your placement will be planning football tournaments that will incorporate both matches and team-building activities that will give the players a good understanding of the 'basics' and the experience of a team structure. You will be introducing passing and tackling techniques as well as position holding, movement and team play, which will mean that your players will develop rapidly. From complicated technical play to friendly 'kick abouts', you will soon develop your own coaching programme, unique to you and your players. The sports academies that are linked to the programme are keen to identify the individuals who will form South Africa's next generation of pro footballers.
