South Africa Horse Riding and Conservation

Spend your days caring for and riding the horses on the reserve whilst taking part in well-structured and extremely informative Equine and Conservation courses. This will teach you all you need to know about African wildlife and conservation, together with the vital aspects of equine care.

Your Typical Itinerary

These activities are the norm, but can be changed and swapped around to suit individual groups. Any one or more of the following activities are available for the different sessions of the day.

First Session – 7am to 9am:
This session will usually consist of at least one of the following:

  • Stable yard routine, which includes fetching horses from stables, grooming, veterinary checks and hoof care
  • Riding lessons
  • Tacking up and going for an outride
  • Fence patrolling on foot or by horseback
  • Bush walks and game drives

Breakfast – 9 am to 10 am.

Second session – 10am to 12 noon:
This session will ordinarily consist of at least one of the following:

  • Lectures on relevant topics – books and pictures are shown to illustrate subjects, discussions, taking notes and working in your study guides
  • Out rides/game drives/ bush walks
  • Various projects on the farm – soil erosion control, road maintenance, fence repairs, planting indigenous trees, control of alien plants etc

Lunch and siesta time – 12noon to 3pm:
This is when you can read, relax and have some time to yourself. During the summer months it gets pretty hot and you will enjoy a cool off in the splash pool.

Third session – 3pm to 6pm:
The afternoon session will normally consist of at least one of the following:

  • Creative craft lessons – you learn to make different artefacts using beads, wire, leather, horsehair, seeds and bush paraphernalia
  • Weapon handling
  • Lectures
  • Riding lessons
  • Drumming
  • Cleaning of tack
