South Africa Rugby Coaching

Trip code: SARC

When you think of sport in South Africa you probably think of rugby partly due to their huge passion for the sport as well being renowned for tough and technical style on the international stage. However, while there is a great passion for Rugby, not all areas of the country offer the ability for young children to play and develop in a well structured environment, especially in the townships around Port Elizabeth. Although it can be hard for these children to get a game going with friends, many are seen kicking and throwing a ball around with each other, dreaming of being the next Francois Pienaar and leading the Springboks to World Cup victory again. Without the chance to play and develop with your help this will remain a dream.

Choose the 14 week option starting on 10th April 2010 and it will include accommodation and meals during the Football World Cup, South Africa, 2010. Experience World Cup fever in South Africa with Port Elizabeth hosting seven matches during your time there, including the 3rd/4th place play-off! Please note that transport and World Cup tickets are not included. Contact the Africa team for further details.

Rugby Coaching in Port Elizabeth

Anybody who has a passion for playing or coaching Rugby will have an amazing experience on this programme. As long as you have some understanding of the game you will be able to offer great assistance to the children that you will coach, whether you just play socially with friends, have represented your school, club or university team or even as far as holding coaching qualifications. By coaching these children you will start to give enthusiastic these players the chance to play the sport they love in an organised and fun environment.

The first part of your placement will be to help organise and run the training clinics for the children, as well as making sure that they all have decent Rugby equipment to use. This placement will not only be a great for forming relationships with the players but also for developing your own confidence. The second part of your placement will be planning rugby tournaments that will incorporate both matches and team-building activities that will give the players a good understanding of the 'basics' and the experience of a team structure. By introducing simple ball handling skills, movement, position holding and team play, your players will develop rapidly. You will also have solid support from the other volunteers, our in-country staff and local coaches who will give you all the training methods and ideas that you might need. From complicated technical play and beach runs to rucking and mauling formations, you will soon develop your own coaching programme, unique to you and your players.
