Teaching and Development

Programme Details

You will spend your time teaching in Ocean View, on the outskirts of Cape Town whilst also assisting in a number of excellent development schemes, aimed at supporting the wider community.

As a volunteer you will work as a teaching assistant in the classroom. The teacher will allocate a list of names of students who need extra assistance with their work so you will be working on a one on one basis with them helping them with their Maths, English and reading etc. Many of the children's parents are illiterate or work long hours and are unable to assist the children with their homework. As a result the children lack confidence and fall behind. Most of the schools here also lack proper facilities but there is a wealth of children that are all eager to learn. Your creativity is also very welcome - the school would like to be able to brighten up the classrooms with bright paints, games etc. so your input is very important!

Your typical schedule will be Monday to Thursday from 8am to 2.15pm and Friday from 8am to 12pm. Weekends are free.

Please note: The project is only open during school term dates. 2010 dates are listed as follows:

1st Term: January 13th - March 23rd
2nd Term: April 12th - June 9th
3rd Term: July 13th - September 23rd
4th Term: October 5th - December 11th

  • Transfer from airport to volunteer accommodation in Fish Hoek
  • Accommodation - shared dormitory room in volunteer house
  • Training: In-country orientation
  • Support: Pre-departure helpdesk, Local in-country team and 24hr emergency support
