South Africa Township Teaching in Cape Town

Trip code: SATT

Cape Town is widely considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities and with its vibrant nightlife and idyllic beaches; it offers the perfect place to visit during a gap year or career break. However, outside the city there are many townships in desperate need of volunteer assistance. Children lack access to necessary education and many have no structured environments to spend their days. This project is ideally suited to those who are interested in improving the education available to underprivileged children and really making a difference to their lives.

Your Typical Itinerary
From Monday through to Thursday, the younger classes finish at 1pm and the older classes stagger the time that they finish from 1.45-2.30pm. On a Friday, the school finishes at 1pm and 1.30pm

7-7.30am - Breakfast
7.45am - Make your way to the school
8.15am-12.50pm - Classroom assistance at school
12.50-1pm - School break
1-2.30pm - Classroom assistance at school
2.30-4pm - Extra tuition (depending on numbers may be one volunteer to four or five pupils) or after school activity such as drama, music classes, sports

Please Note: The timetable above is a guideline of a typical day, however, schedules may vary according to the weather, necessary schedule changes etc. Volunteers need to be flexible and use their initiative to keep the children motivated.

Starting at 8.15am and finishing at the school at 4pm can be a really long day for volunteers, especially as the children are not very well disciplined, and the breaks are relatively short compared with Western school’s timetables. For this reason volunteers will also be given the option to start their day at the school at 10.30. You will more than likely find that the most rewarding part of the day will be when you are helping the children after school in various activities. At this time you have the opportunity to really use your initiative and are able to relate directly to the children rather than following the teacher and the school’s set curriculum.

In the school holiday’s volunteers are able to assist with extra lessons for two to three hours at the local community hall in the township. Mostly, these lessons will involve maths, drama, music and chess.

Please note: Itineraries and activities are subject to change
