South Africa Wild Coast Conservation

Set within a stunning lush green private game reserve, through this programme you will be working behind the scenes and become actively involved in wildlife conservation. Get involved in long-term conservation and development schemes, aimed at maintaining the private reserve, and ensuring the safety of the wildlife. During your placement you will also have the opportunity to work hands on with young lions at a rearing centre and interact with elephants on the reserve.

South Africa Wild Coast Conservation

Volunteer Role

Each day will vary in a range of activities, which will see you working as part of an integral team amongst a stunning backdrop of the Wild Coast. At weekends, you will also get to explore and enjoy this area, making the most of all of the excursions available.

You can expect to take part in the following activities:

  • Fence patrols for snares and threats to wildlife, fence management and maintenance
  • Alien vegetation and soil erosion control
  • Game counts and wildlife research and monitoring
  • Interaction experiences at the elephant sanctuary
  • Working at the lion cub rearing centre
  • Environmental lectures and wildlife management skills
  • African night out under the stars
  • Alternative quad biking bush experience
  • Bush walks and game drives: Species identification and interpretation
  • Cultivation of indigenous plants and help develop the nursery. These plants will be used to rehabilitate erosion sites as well as alien vegetation sites.

What’s Included in the Programme

  • Project Fee: this entails financing that goes directly back into the project that you are involved with. This project fee facilitates funding for items such as building materials, equipment, supplies, foodstuffs, etc
  • Airport transfers both to and from East London Airport
  • Arrival orientation in South Africa
  • Excursions listed in your orientation
  • Accommodation and meals during your orientation and placement
  • Full support and assistance from your co-ordinator throughout your time on your placement

What’s Not Included in the Programme

  • Personal travel insurance for the duration of your placement, which should include cover for repatriation
  • All flights
  • Private tents, if requested
  • All items of a personal nature, such as curios, gifts, clothing (work and other)
  • E-mail/Internet and telephone calls
  • Soft drinks, wines and spirits
  • Any excursions over and above your planned itinerary
