The Volunteer Project

As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to experience and immerse yourself in a different culture, as well as a way of thought which will make you learn more about yourself. Undoubtedly you will face the day-to-day frustrations and challenges that are Sri Lanka but overall you'll be greeted by the warm Sri Lankan smile and hospitality, and struck by the sheer beauty of your surroundings. You will have at least two days off a week depending on your workload, giving you ample opportunity to explore Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage.

The project area is facing the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Most of the people living in this community were involved in the traditional fishing industry with their houses located very near to the sea. As a result of Tsunami, all the houses in the area were destroyed. Several projects were started to rebuild the houses and improve the social economic standard of the community. Volunteers helped to clean the debris on the beach, grow Rana trees along the beach, help the community to build/refurbish their houses and provide assistance to generate new income. Present activities volunteers are needed for include capacity building of Tsunami affected women by helping them to get involved in an income generating handicraft programme. Volunteers will also assist the children and adults to learn functional English which will give them many more opportunities in life and assist their upward mobility. The project also holds health camps and computer literacy classes for school leavers with the help of volunteers. There is also a turtle conservation project in the same premises which enables volunteers to take part in related activities.

Please note: This project accepts volunteers of all ages and it is likely there will be a wide age range of people on the project at any one time.
