Sri Lanka Teach English Volunteer Project
|
Project Age Limit
Minimum of 18 years
The Volunteer Programme This programme offers you the opportunity to teach English in a developing country to children who are very keen to learn. You will be living with a local family in a beautiful location whilst cycling or walking to school each day.
Volunteer Role The children you will be teaching will be between the ages of 6 and 19 years old. The age group that you will be teaching will depend on the needs of the school at the time of your arrival. The classes will have anywhere from 30-40 children per class and the school will hold approximately 100-2000 children. As a volunteer you will be responsible for helping the teachers with their class operation.
Teachers will be hands on with you for your introduction to teaching. Eventually class time will be handed over to you. In the afternoon you can put on extra classes for children especially for those that are about to sit public exams. You can organise music, drama, art classes etc. Or you can simply join the children in the area for sports and social activities.
Project Support Throughout your stay in Sri Lanka, you will have the support and guidance of a local coordinator. They will provide you with assistance and help you with any questions or advice you may need during your stay. In addition, we will provide you with a 24 hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
Project Orientation On your first full day in Sri Lanka you will be given a comprehensive orientation. The orientation will include:
- An introduction to Sri Lanka culture and values
- Your health and safety whilst in Sri Lanka
- Workplace ethics before starting your project
- Money, transportation and free time
- An introduction to the area
- Local food and practices
Accommodation & Meals You will be living with a local Sri Lankan family. This could be with the school principle or with parents of the children you will be teaching. You will have a private room, the bathrooms are typically Asian, and include a shower and western toilet in most. You will receive three meals a day from your home stay family. Most of the home stays will be close to the school so you should be able to walk or cycle.
