Sucre Orphanage Volunteer Bolivia
Our orphanage is located in Sucre city centre, and cares for 40-50 children aged 0-6 years old, who have been abandoned by their parents. The orphanage is well maintained and equipped with good facilities to help the children attain personal development and education. As a result of the high quality care they provide, combined with help from volunteers, they have been awarded various honours from other orphanages in Sucre.
Most children at the centre have never had a "real" childhood or experienced loving, caring, stable relationships. By playing games with volunteers, they can learn to live as a child again and express their emotions.
Volunteer’s affection towards the children is vitally important for their self-esteem and personal development.
Volunteer work activities Volunteers are desperately needed to organize recreational activities for the children, such as painting, drawing, dances, music and sports. Volunteers will also assist in basic daily care of the children, including cooking, feeding and cleaning. You should be flexible and willing to take the initiative when needed, and prepared to help with other tasks depending on the necessity at the time.
Volunteers are required to help in the morning or afternoon (or both). Your assistance will contribute towards building children’s confidence and skills, from which they will benefit later on in life.
Project Requirements All the volunteers need to have some knowledge of the Spanish language before starting their volunteer work, not only to get the most out of the project, but also to get around and integrate with the locals. If you do not already speak Spanish it is strongly recommended you take our language course prior to the start of the programme. These are available for 2 or 4 weeks, and are easily combined with the project.
Project Duration We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of 4 weeks as this facilitates the build up of trust between you, the children and the staff.
Free time and organised activities Free time is during the evenings and on the weekends. During this time you can take excursions to other parts of the country, or stay in town to get to know the community more intimately.
Sandra Maldonado, our onsite coordinator and language school director, is a fantastic host and will organise any tours or excursions for you at a discount. Alternatively you can travel independently with other volunteers from this project or other projects in Sucre.
Accommodation & Meals Our volunteer apartment is located 8 blocks from the volunteer project; a 20 minute walk, or a short bus ride away. Living here gives volunteers the opportunity to live independently and affords them the ability to come and go as they please.
You can request a shared or private room, but will share a bathroom, kitchen and living room with other volunteers. Please note meals are not included during your stay in the apartment. Usually volunteers take it in turns to cook meals or simply eat out at local restaurants, which are very cheap by western standards. A standard 3-course meal can cost as little as $1-$2 for the money-conscious volunteer!
A nearby host family live on the same street, and provide a laundry service for the duration of your stay.
If you should have any questions about the programmes then don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01892 516164 or contact Matt Fenton on matt.fenton@realgap.co.uk
