Project Location
The project is situated in the city of Florianopolis, which is on the Island of Santa Catarina just off the coast in the east of Brazil.

Florianopolis
Also known as ‘Floripa’, the city of Florianopolis is the capital of Santa Catarina state, on the South part of the coast. The area is full of natural delights, including white sand beaches, lagoons, dunes and jungle-covered mountains. The whole area is said to have German and Italian influences, even though it was settled by the Portuguese from the archipelago of the Azores! The islands surrounding the city’s bay are all home to forts used as protection in the 17th Century. Now in various states of disrepair, the forts leave a haunting memory of Brazil’s colonial past. The area is also thought to have the best waves in the whole of Brazil, so this project is ideally located for anyone who loves surfing!

Free Time
You must work a minimum of 10 hours a week on the projects, though of course you can work a lot more if you would like. So, depending on how many hours you choose to work and whether you choose to work in the morning or in the afternoon you will have a reasonable amount of spare time, including the weekends, to explore the area. One thing that Florianopolis and the surrounding area has in abundance is beaches! Whether you like busy, isolated beaches or a good surf spot, there’ll be a suitable beach for you to hang out on.

Joaquina, Mole and Mocambique are thought to be the best surfing beaches in Brazil. Santa Catarina Island also has a couple of gorgeous blue lagoons- Lagoa da Conceição and Peri, both of which offer a good range of watersports as well as great bars and restaurants on its shores.

Head onto the mainland for further excursions. A couple of hours inland you’ll find mountains and the Araucaria moist forests, home to endangered species and endemic bird species.

Getting There
Florianopolis is served by Hercilio Luz International Airport.

From Rio de Janeiro, for those doing the language school, you will need to get a short internal flight from Rio to Florianopolis. If you are not attending the Rio language school, you can fly straight into Florianopolis, where you will be met at the airport.
