Sports Volunteer Programme
This unique sports-coaching project, allows you to coach sports and games to local children with a key focus on football. The long-term aims are to promote the most talented players, hopefully giving them the opportunity to qualify for football scholarships or even professional contracts. Although this is long-term and ambitious, it is a realistic goal considering the wealth of talent in Mwanza and the sheer number of children playing football. You will also have the opportunity to combine this programme with other community projects within the area, such as, working in an orphanage, building and painting schools or teaching more academic subjects to street boys.
Volunteer Role
Working with a number of schools and orphanages in central Mwanza, you will focus on coaching football to street children during school (for those who are not yet attending school) and out of school hours. You will be allocated a school, which you will visit once or twice a week in order to spot talented pupils to join the sports programme.
You will be working alongside locally trained coaches, who will be able to offer their advice and help with translations, if needed. Portsmouth FC lesson plans are available to help you to carry out your training session.
You will be involved with the following activities:
- Coaching and match/tournament organisation.
- Identification of children with extraordinary talent.
- Operation of a high-performance academy to further develop the skills of the highly talented children identified through this project.
Football Academy
The early stages of the programme will provide the children with as much coaching as possible. This allows a wider range of children to benefit from your volunteer efforts. However, over a period of time, certain players will emerge as being the most talented in the programme. It will be your responsibility to identify these players and select them to attend our Football Academy, which is the second stage of the programme.
The objective of the academy is to offer exclusive/further coaching to young players with potential, so that they can develop their skills even further. Part of your role will be to offer valuable advice and skill, which will help these players to become more skilful and therefore more valuable team members. By reinforcing the importance of hard work and team spirit, you will help them to become both better players and members of the community. Over the years, these top-performing players will be developed and nurtured, hopefully to the extent that they will be good enough to apply for football scholarships, trials with professional teams and other positions within the sport. In most cases, this academy will be the child’s best opportunity to access higher education and the possibility of a professional sporting career.
