Muay Thai, or Thai Boxing as it’s known in the West, is the national sport in Thailand and one of the most popular forms of martial arts in South East Asia.

Known as the “art of the eight limbs”, this sport teaches you to combat your opponent using 8 different points of contact on the body – feet, knees, elbows and hands. It is one of the most physical martial arts, but also one of the most exclusive.

This programme has 4 week, 6 week and 8 week options. On the 4-week programme, you will have the introduction week and then the subsequent weeks will be spent training.

Programme Age Limit
Minimum 17 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health.

Programme Requirements
This programme requires you to be active, so it is the responsibility of all participants to ensure they can participate in a programme of this nature.

Thai Culture and Boxing Programme
Get to know Thailand in a different way!  Learn the language, experience the unique opportunity of living with monks at a temple, trek through jungles or help the locals with community development projects.

Relax for a week on the beautiful island of Ko Samet at the end of your programme, to complete your Thai Boxing Experience.

If you opt for the Thai Experience and Boxing option, weeks 1 to 8 will be as described below. However, the programme is very flexible and you can design your very own Thai boxing experience, based around the basic programme i.e. add more boxing and less culture weeks.

Programme Outline
Your programme begins with a 2-night stopover in Bangkok. Upon arrival at Bangkok airport you will be met by a guide who will take you to the Hotel.  You will be transferred by air-conditioned bus for your 2-night stop over which includes your breakfasts.

Once at the hotel, you and the other volunteers can relax and explore this amazing and vibrant capital, we will be picking you up from the hotel lobby at 2pm on Sunday!

Facilities at the hotel

  • Large & friendly hotel with moderate facilities. Relax in the outdoor pool, play some snooker or have a few drinks in the in-house bar or restaurant
  • Plenty of things to visit near by including shops, bars, cafes, markets, temples and the beautiful Royal Palace.

Whether you are an absolute beginner or have been learning this martial art for many years, our instructor will be able to develop a training programme to suit you.

While your training will look at many different areas, a large part of Thai boxing focuses on agility, speed and balance. In order to develop each discipline of Muay Thai (i.e. punches, kicks, elbows etc), you will learn exercises and training drills that promote these 3 important things.

Accommodation
Your new home will be one of our 3 ‘Eco Houses’ in Singburi in central Thailand. The houses sleep from 20 to 50 people. All houses have dorm rooms with the number of beds ranging from 3 to 12. All houses have western style toilets. Bathrooms have showers and the water is cool – nice and refreshing in the heat. Each house has a communal area where you can eat, relax and meet other people.

Most of the houses are within walking distance of a local shop and a make shift bar provided by the friendly locals. The doors and windows are screened (to protect you from mosquitoes).   There are fans in the room.

Departure from Ko Samet
On Saturday you will depart from the resort and will be taken back to the coach station in Bangkok. Please note this night is not included. The reasons why we say onward travel from Sunday is in case of situations (for example weather conditions) prevent you from getting back to Bangkok on the Saturday. Most people spend their final night in a hotel or hostel close to Ko Sian Road, here they can do their last minute shopping or relax in the many bars it has to offer. Accommodation in this area costs just a few pounds per night.

Group flight option
If you are worried about travelling by yourself, or like the idea of meeting fellow travellers before you even arrive in Thailand, why not take our group flight option? This is a great way to travel with like-minded travellers. We will give you a list of contact details of Real Gap customers joining your flight. So you can get in touch and make friends before you even leave the UK!

Please contact a Real Gap travel advisor for the group flight dates.
