Get to know Thailand in a different way! Learn the language, experience the unique opportunity of living with monks at a temple, trek through jungles or spend a week teaching and learn how to Scuba Dive on a PADI Certified Course. By the end of your programme, you will have experienced many of the different elements that make Thailand one of the most popular places for a gap year or career break.

The Programme
The programme is divided into 4 different weeks, each with their own highlights and distinct flavour of Thai Culture. The first week is your orientation to Thailand, with language lessons and more. The second week is full of activities and cultural experiences that most travellers would not witness. The third week is spent trekking in lush national parks before the programme culminates with a diving course in one of South East Asia’s top diving spots in the fourth week.

Your Scuba Course will take place on the pristine island of Koh Tao. Koh Tao is situated in the Gulf of Thailand and offers one of the best locations for year-round diving in Thailand. The Island has thousands of breeds of tropical fish, corals and is frequented by Whale Sharks. On Tao Island you will also be free to:

  • Sun bathe
  • Go snorkelling
  • Explore the beautiful island or simply chill out in the many beach bars in the evenings!

Diving Course
Your course will be conducted under the supervision of a fully qualified dive master, whom will take you through all practical and theoretical instruction. The theoretical instruction will include:

  • Breathing control under water
  • Nitrogen narcosis detection
  • Emergency procedures
  • Buoyancy control
  • Hand signals for under water communication etc
  • Importance of a dive buddy
  • Basic navigation

Project Age Limit
Minimum age 17, maximum decided on potential participant’s health

Project Requirements
Participants should ensure they are fit and able to take part in a programme of this nature

Project Support
Throughout your stay in Thailand you will have the support and guidance of our local programme coordinators. They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.  The school staff will be on hand throughout the day and the sports coordinator will be with you to offer any other assistance.

In addition, we will provide you with a 24 hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.

Programme Accommodation
Your new home will be one of our 3 ‘Eco Houses’ in Singburi in central Thailand – the Lemon House (top), the Twin House (middle) and the Brown House (bottom).

This camp is situated about 10 km from the town of Singburi and takes about 15 minutes from the eco-houses you will be staying in.  In Singburi you will find all the amenities you could need i.e. internet, shops, swimming pool, hospital, pharmacy, banks and restaurants.  There are plenty of trips into Singburi or you can easily take a taxi.

The houses sleep from 20 to 50 people.  All houses have dorm rooms with the number of beds ranging from 3 to 12.  All houses have western style toilets and one even as an Asian toilet!  Each bathroom has a shower and the water is always cool – nice and refreshing in the heat.  All houses have a communal area where you can eat, relax and meet.

Most of the houses are within walking distance of a local shop and a make shift bar provided by the friendly locals.

The doors and windows are screened (to protect you from mosquitoes). There are fans in the rooms.

Accommodation on Koh Tao
You will stay in a popular village resort on Haat Sai Ree. The rooms are seconds away from the white sandy beach and are close to all of the local restaurants and bars.

Bangkok Stop over
Upon arrival at Bangkok airport you will be met by a guide who will take you to the Hotel. You will be transferred by air-conditioned bus for your 2-night stop over which includes your breakfasts.

Once at the hotel, you and the other volunteers can relax and explore this amazing and vibrant capital, we will be picking you up from the hotel lobby at 2pm on Sunday!!

Facilities at the hotel

  • Situated just 10 minutes from the famous backpacker street Khoa San Road in the Banglamphu area.
  • Large & friendly hotel with moderate facilities.  Relax in the outdoor pool, play some snooker or have a few drinks in the in-house bar or restaurant
  • Plenty of things to visit near by including shops, bars, cafes, markets, temples and the beautiful Royal Palace.

Group flight option
If you are worried about travelling by yourself, or like the idea of meeting fellow travellers before you even arrive in Thailand, why not take our group flight option? This is a great way to travel with like-minded travellers. We will give you a list of contact details of Real Gap customers joining your flight. So you can get in touch and make friends before you even leave the UK!

Please contact a Real Gap travel advisor for the group flight dates.
