Thailand gap year - Gap year programmes in Thailand

Thailand is firmly established as one of the most popular backpacker destinations for a gap year or career break. Indeed, Thailand attracts more visitors than any other country in South-east Asia. Our Thailand page takes a look at some of the reasons why Thailand is such a great place to visit.

Thailand has stunning tropical beaches Thailand has fantastic beaches

Both the west and east coasts of Thailand are blessed with truly stunning tropical beaches. Beaches in Thailand are great for backpackers in that their beach huts offer affordable places to stay right on the beach. Two of the most popular Thailand beach destinations for backpackers are the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phanagan. Koh Phanagan is where Thailand's famous ‘Full Moon' beach parties are held on Haad Rin beach. Thailand's beaches were immortalised in the James Bond film ‘The Man with the Golden Gun' and, more recently, in the Leonardo di Caprio movie ‘The Beach.'

Trekking in Thailand

For the more energetic backpacker Thailand offers some excellent areas for trekking. The best region for trekking in Thailand is north of Bangkok, in the ‘Golden Triangle' area of Chiang Mai. Many visitors to Thailand are tempted to skip the north and head south straight away to the beaches. Those who do make the effort are rewarded with some tremendous jungle scenery and the chance to visit some of Thailand's beautiful hilltop villages.

Thailand possesses a unique culture

Thailand is renowned for its hospitality and warm, friendly people. Most visitors to Thailand arrive in Bangkok, a bustling and fascinating modern city set on the busy Chao Phraya River. Thailand is predominantly a Buddhist country and in Bangkok, as with the rest of Thailand, you are never too far away from a Buddhist temple. There are some beautiful temples and buildings throughout Thailand but, if you make the effort to see only one, then make sure it's Bangkok's sumptuous golden Royal Grand Palace. Another highlight of Thai culture that should be mentioned is its superb cuisine. If you're a lover of food, the countless excellent restaurants really add to the enjoyment of your time in Thailand.
